The tragedy of abortion can never be fully demonstrated. Yes, it is an emotional issue. One woman writes, "the sound of the suction machine haunts me to this day. I cannot vacuum a floor without thinking of my abortion..." There have been reports of dumpsters found in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles filled with fetuses, some of whom could have survived. Abortion is a horrible thing.
The subject of abortion hinges on the question of life and the soul. There are some who justify abortion by saying that there is no life until birth, that, until the "breath" of life is breathed, there is no soul. This position cannot be biblically defended. Can one honestly read the following passages and conclude that a fetus is a non-entity, not human, and void of a soul?
"...There is a man child conceived" (Job 3:3).
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb" (NIV-Psalm 139:13).
"Thus saith the Lord that made thee, and formed thee from the womb" (Isaiah 44:2,24).
"Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name . . . and now, saith the Lord that formed me from the womb . . ." (Isaiah 49:1,5).
"Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations" (Jeremiah 1:5).
God recognized David, Isaiah, and Jeremiah as living souls, while they were yet in their mother's womb! It would have been wrong to have taken their life from their mother's womb.
The New Testament leads us to the same conclusion. Unborn John the Baptist leaped in his mother's womb (Luke 1:41). John was a living soul - even though he was still unborn. It would have been wrong to have taken his life from his mother's womb.
No man has the right to take innocent life. "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed" (Genesis 9:6). "You shall not murder" (NIV-Exodus 20:13). Abortion is the shedding of innocent blood; it is murder.
Juli Loesch, founder of Prolifers for Survival says, "The most gentle way to terminate a pregnancy is childbirth." Perhaps it should be said, the only way to terminate a pregnancy is childbirth.
