Soperton, GA
The
Soperton work was started in May 1996. The present preacher is Dave Atnip, Sr., who did missionary work
for 2 1/2 years in
Suriname, South America before coming to help start the work in Soperton. The town of Soperton is located on
Highway 221, about 8 miles south of Interstate 16 which runs from Macon to Savannah, Georgia. Soperton is
located in Treutlen County, and is the county seat of this county. There are presently about 3000 people
residing in Soperton and about 6000 in the whole county. This town is what might be referred to as a
"bedroom" community, where people live and then go to work in nearby towns. The nearby towns are: Dublin,
Vidalia, Swainsboro and Mount Vernon. There are a lot of older people in Soperton. There is very little
crime and the people here are friendly. We are hoping that the town will grow, since an alternative fuels
plant has been recently built, and also the prison in Alamo: Wheeler
County Correctional Facility, has recently expanded and is now
hiring more workers for their facility. The main industry in this area is agricultural.
The
church presently has 12 faithful members and also members of other congregations who come to support us on a
regular basis. Our outreach includes our regular worship services: Sunday morning Bible study: 10 - 11 AM.
Worship service: 11-12 AM, Sunday evening: 6 PM, and then Wednesday evening: 7:30 - 8:30 PM. We also usually
have 2 Gospel meetings per year, we mail out the Heart to
Heart publication on a regular basis. We have an article each week in the local
newspaper. We have a Ladies Bible class that meets every other Tuesday, and a prison
ministry. We are also in the process of trying to build a new building on the land that we have
purchased for that purpose. We also put out a monthly newsletter which keeps people
informed of what is going on with the Soperton work. We also attend the Georgia Bible
Camp in Hahira, Georgia, and we keep in contact with our sister
congregations in the area. We welcome everyone to come and visit with us, or to move here if that is
possible. We have pleasant falls, mild winters and a rather lengthy spring time which is usually very
pleasant, and then it gets pretty warm in the summer, which provides an ideal growing season. Our goal is
to grow both spiritually and in numbers and to help the work here to become self
supporting.
